AUSTIN (February 21, 2014) Texas Gov. Rick Perry condemned inflammatory remarks by Ted Nugent that resurfaced after the transplanted Central Texas rocker campaigned with Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott, who’s seeking the GOP nomination to succeed Perry.

Nugent was quoted as calling President Barack Obama a "subhuman mongrel" in an interview last month.

Perry said Thursday on CNN’s “Situation Room” that he's "got a problem calling the president a mongrel,” but said no one should be surprised that Nugent said something outrageous.

Nugent performed at Perry's inauguration in 2007.

Abbott, the GOP favorite to succeed Perry, was accompanied by Nugent at campaign stops this week but sidestepped questions about divisive comments previously made by Nugent regarding immigrants and women.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis denounced Abbott’s decision to invite Nugent.
