Perry, Texas GOP Revive Abortion Restrictions Fight

DALLAS (June 27, 2013)---Gov. Rick Perry said Thursday that the filibuster and protests that kept the Texas Senate from voting on tighter abortion restrictions were "nothing more than the hijacking of the democratic process."

Addressing the National Right to Life Convention Thursday, Perry vowed Texas will push ahead to approve a ban on abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy and to place new requirements on abortion clinics.

State Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, with some last minute help from protesters in the public gallery, successfully killed the bill imposing the new restrictions in the Legislature at midnight Tuesday, but Perry called a second special legislative session starting Monday.

That will give the Republican-controlled Legislature an extra 30 days to pass the new limits on abortion.
