Romney Campaign Challenges Criticism From Automakers

TAMPA, Fla. (October 31, 2012)--Mitt Romney's presidential campaign Wednesday was challenging criticism from U.S. automakers over campaign ads that claim General Motors and Chrysler are adding jobs in China at the expense of Ohio.

"Their comments don't refute anything in our ad,” Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Wednesday.

Romney ads on TV and radio repeat a version of a claim Romney made in a campaign speech last week: that Chrysler is moving Jeep production to China.

The ads are airing in Toledo, where the auto industry employs thousands.

On Tuesday, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne e-mailed employees to restate, "Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China."

General Motors, mentioned in a Romney radio ad, released a statement calling the campaign "some parallel universe."
