AUSTIN (December 11, 2013) U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, says GOP primary challenger U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Houston, is a fascinating person, but that he's not overly worried about in his bid for another term.
In a surprise move, Stockman withdrew his filing for re-election to his suburban Houston congressional seat and instead challenged Conryn.
Stockman is the kind of tea party-backed challenger Cornyn, the Senate minority whip, hoped to avoid ahead of the Texas Republican primary in March, but Cornyn noted Wednesday that 12 other, little-known Democrats and Republicans have challenged him.
He said he was paying Stockman only as much attention as he was any of them.
“While Mr. Stockman is a fascinating person, there's no guarantee that he's actually going to be competitive in the primary,” Cornyn said.
