HOUSTON (August 31, 2013)—Harris County District Attorney Mike Anderson died Friday after a battle with cancer.

He was 57.

Joe Stinebaker, a spokesman for Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, said officials were informed that Anderson died on Friday evening.

Anderson, who took office on Jan. 19, revealed in May he was being treated for cancer.

Anderson's office did not say what type of cancer the district attorney was battling.

Anderson had a long career in law enforcement, working about 30 years as both a prosecutor and a district court judge.

Stinebaker said Gov. Rick Perry would appoint a replacement for Anderson.
