AUSTIN (November 9, 2012)—U.S. Rep. Quico Canseco, R-San Antonio, conceded defeat Friday to Democratic state Rep. Pete Gallego in Texas' Congressional District 23.

Gallego's unofficial margin of victory over the first-term Canseco was about 9,200 ballots out of the nearly 191,700 that were cast in the district, which stretches from San Antonio to eastern El Paso County.

Canseco challenged the results, alleging photocopying of ballots marked for Gallego in some rural counties.

His campaign also said military and absentee ballots would prove Canseco won, once they were counted.

But Canseco’s campaign manager Scott Yeldell said Friday that the Texas attorney general's office told the campaign it would have to pay for a full investigation into alleged wrongdoing.

Yeldell said that would be "too time-consuming and expensive."

Gallego said he had received a "congratulatory call from Mr. Canseco."
