Texas Granted Education Waiver

WASHINGTON (September 30, 2013)--The U.S. Education Department announced Monday it has granted a waiver to Texas from the most strenuous requirements of the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law.

The department said it issued the waiver in exchange for a state plan to prepare students for college and career, focus aid on the neediest students and support effective teaching and leadership.

Already, 41 states and the District of Columbia have been issued similar waivers.

No Child Left Behind has been up for renewal since 2007, but because Congress has failed to update it, the administration said it would issue waivers around it as a stop-gap measure.
