Texas Lt. Gov. Sues Ex-Campaign Manager For Millions

AUSTIN (March 7, 2013)—Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has filed a lawsuit that alleges his former campaign manager skimmed more than $2 million from Dewhurst's campaign funds over five years.

The Republican filed the lawsuit in state district court in Austin against Kenneth Barfield, who managed Dewhurst campaigns for more than a decade.

The lawsuit alleges that Barfield began diverting Dewhurst campaign funds sometime before 2010 by collecting on false invoices from his consulting company.

According to the lawsuit, the activity went undetected for years because of the volume of activity and expenditures made during statewide campaigns.

The suit doesn’t specify damages.

State and federal authorities are investigating.

Dewhurst lost the 2012 Republican primary race for the U.S. Senate nomination to Ted Cruz, who went on to win the seat, replacing longtime Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, who decided not to seek another term.
