WASHINGTON (November 8, 2012)--White House adviser David Axelrod told MSNBC Thursday the president was "re-elected in a significant way" on a promise to raise taxes on wealthier Americans, and he said he's hoping the results of the election will be seen as "a vote for cooperation."

He said among those dismissing the value of compromise was Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, who was defeated.

The White House and leaders of the House and Senate face a January deadline for averting automatic spending cuts and tax increases.

“Everyone's going to have to come with an open mind" to the talks about how to reduce the nation's deficits, Axelrod said.

House Speaker John Boehner said Republicans are willing to consider some form of higher tax revenue - but only "under the right conditions."
