HOUSTON (September 2, 2010)--Democratic gubernatorial challenger Bill White has released his plan to secure the U.S.-Mexico border with 1,000 new local law enforcement officers and 250 state troopers.

White, speaking to reporters Thursday, said Republican Gov. Rick Perry has been a failure on the issue over his 10 years in office.

White's plan calls for the new positions to be paid for with money federal grants, additional state money and forfeiture dollars from drug seizures.

White also promised to use state money more effectively, establish formal partnerships with local and federal law agencies and "revamp" the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The former Houston mayor also said he would help local law enforcement agencies adopt a federal program called Secure Communities, which he used in Houston to identify criminal illegal immigrants and get them turned over to federal authorities.

Great comments out here. But, no one has pointed out that White's solution, while sounding good to some that can't see past their noses, is essentially that of Janet Napolitano's. Let local authorities handle the situation, as if it were a local violation of law. The border requires a huge influx of either Regular Army troops, Border Patrol or National Guard. Not dumping the responsibility on overstressed local authorities who don't have the training to handle armed drug militias and terrorists. Perry has put some guard units and several rangers down there, but that is way to small, as well. He could call out the guard, in force, but the guard is an arm of the Federal Gov't at the whim of Hussein, who would simply cancel the deployment before it could take place. JR
