CHICAGO (September 7, 2010)--Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said Tuesday he's not running for reelection after more than 20 years in office.
Daley said Tuesday he's been thinking about not running for several months and has become comfortable with his decision over the last several weeks.
“It just feels right," and that the time to move on "is now,” he said.
Daley, 68, has been Chicago's mayor since 1989.
The Democrat called the announcement "a personal decision," and says he and his family now begin a "new phase of our lives."
His wife, Maggie, recently has been battling cancer.
Daley was elected to the state Senate in 1972 and as Cook County state's attorney in 1980.
He became Chicago mayor in 1989 after he won a special mayoral election after the death of Mayor Harold Washington.

With Daley not running could this be a step towards making politics in Chicago a fair process ....... NOT. The elections in Illinois are so corrupt they cannot be considered elections at all. But good ridden to the corrupt SOB.
Thank God that idiot Daley will be leaving office!!! Maybe Chicago will pull back from the brink of Socialism soon! Now, if we can just get that demon-spawn Bloomburg in New York City to quit too!
