(December 2, 2008)—Former First Lady Barbara Bush was released Tuesday from the Houston hospital where she underwent surgery last week for a perforated ulcer.

Doctors at Methodist Hospital said the 83-year-old ex-first lady is in good condition and recovering as expected.

Mrs. Bush was hospitalized for abdominal pains and underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer Nov. 25.

During the procedure, doctors closed a nearly 1.5-centimeter hole caused by the ulcer.

She and former President George H.W. Bush live in Houston.

The ex-president thanked the hospital staff for taking care of his wife.

He said his wife is "feeling much, much better" and he's glad to get her home.

Her surgeon, Dr. Pat Reardon, said Mrs. Bush's lab test results and vital signs are normal and she'll be on a liquid and soft food diet for several more days.
