AUSTIN (May 14, 2009)--Executive Commissioner Albert Hawkins is retiring as head of the state Health and Human Services Commission.

Hawkins said he had notified Gov. Rick Perry Thursday of his plans to leave office.

The commission oversees health and social services in Texas, including the Department of Family and Protective Services and the Department of Aging and Disability Services.

Perry appointed Hawkins to the post in January 2003.
