WASHINGTON (July 24, 2009)--President Barack Obama has called the white policeman who arrested black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.

The president says he believes the sergeant to be an outstanding police officer.

The president said Friday that he continues to think both the officer, Sgt. James Crowley, and Gates overreacted during the incident, but Mr. Obama also faulted his own comments.

Making an impromptu appearance at the daily White House briefing, Mr. Obama told reporters: "I could've calibrated those words differently."

The president caused a stir when he said at a prime-time news conference earlier this week that police in Cambridge, Mass., had "acted stupidly" by arresting Gates.

I don't drink either and that offer struck me as "distasteful" especially coming from the highest office of the USA. If I heard right, it was my understanding that the President had to quit smoking, as that would be a "bad example", which I agree, but I consider alcohol FAR WORSE than a nicotine cigerette. Smoking "mainly" hurts the person doing the smoking, but alcohol affects the brain, nervous system & many other vital body systems and can cause an intoxicated person to injury/kill others. Alchohol has lots of ill effects & ramifications-it is TOXIC (hence in"toxic"ated). As a parent, I don't consider that a good example for our young people, after all "alcohol" is the world's oldest known DRUG. I hope our people in leadership don't have too many...what if we have a crisis & need clear thinking? Another example of how THIS government is trying to police every move of every citizen of this country. This was a city issue & Mr. Obama didnt have all the facts to begin with. He put his nose where it didnt belong. The article I read on this matter stated the homeowner became beligerant & refused to show ID. The police officer was just following procedure. If that were my home, I would be glad they were doing their job. They could have been stopping a burglary in progress. All he had to do was cooperate and be civilized! Police officers put their lives on the line everyday & deserve our respect! Mr. Obama made a very poor choice to get involved & make this about race!! This country is getting deeper in trouble with this administration. Too many poor choices are being made!
