WASHINGTON (September 19, 2009)—U.S. House Republican leader John Boehner says the nationwide Tea Party protests are the result of a pushback against Democrats' spending.

Boehner says his Democratic colleagues are "bankrupting" the country.

People are demonstrating and attending town hall meetings because, Boehner said, "We're in the midst of a political rebellion in America."

The congressman spoke Saturday at the annual gathering of the religious right at the Values Voter Summit in Washington.

Boehner said he attended a Tea Party protest over the Labor Day weekend near his home of West Chester, Ohio that drew 18,000 people.

He said the crowd told members of Congress "enough is enough."

Last weekend, tens of thousands of protesters fed up with government spending marched to the Capitol.
