WASHINGTON (October 7, 2009)--The U.S. Senate approved a resolution Wednesday apologizing to American Indians for years of "ill-conceived policies" and acts of violence by U.S. citizens.

Lawmakers said the resolution, included in a defense-spending bill approved late Tuesday, was a symbolic gesture meant to promote a renewed commitment to tribal communities.

Republican Sam Brownback of Kansas and Democrat Byron Dorgan of North Dakota introduced the resolution.

Brownback has pushed for the measure since 2004.

The Senate approved a similar resolution in 2008 as part of a bill to increase funding for Indian health care, but the measure failed to advance in the House.

Lawmakers are also developing legislation to improve health care and bolster public safety on reservations.

Illegal immigrants here from south of the border may want to file away a copy of this apology resolution to give to our descendents in a hundred years or so.

Isn't it time to acclimate into normal society. Granted, their land was stolen and they were treated unfairly. That was horrible and wrong and should be apologized for. But it was over 100 years ago. No one is keeping these people from attaining the American dream. They just have to take responsibility for their destiny. Step 1. Join the rest of us in "normal" society Step 2. ???? Step 3. Profit
