WASHINGTON (October 23, 2009)--The question of abortion is turning out to be a major hurdle as House Democrats try to shape their final version of a health care overhaul.
At issue is whether the House remake of the nation's health care system would effectively allow federal funding of abortion.
At least two-dozen anti-abortion Democrats believe it would and their opposition puts them at odds with Democratic leaders just weeks ahead of anticipated floor action on the bill.
The main point of contention is proposed new federal subsidies that would help lower-income people purchase health care coverage from private plans and potentially from a new government-sponsored plan within a new purchasing exchange.
The Democrats' health overhaul version would create a new stream of federal funding not covered by the current law that bans federal funding of abortions.

I am a man who works full time so my wife can work part time in child care with our 2 yr old son. I change him, bath him, and spend most my off time with my family. We are both well educated, and this lifestyle has been our choice. Any decisions concering our son have been made together. There are plenty of couples out there begging to adopt. It is the fool who doesn't practice safety and gets pregnant, then assumes the rights of an unborn child as their own (selfishly). Not only should we not federally fund abortion, but their should be federally funded programs for adoption, placement and education (not including abortion). So many times we confuse our personal rights and freedoms over that of an unborn child's right to life. That confusion becomes a rationalization for how we deal with our mistakes, and we call it our rights. Our experiences drive our decisions, and it sounds like some of you have had bad ones w/ men & children. It's not always that way. I do support maternity care.
I am most certainly a man! lol I tend to be pro choice because I will never need to make the decision about a pregnancy myself, but if I was a woman and found myself pregnant for whatever reason, I would want the freedom to choose one way or the other. Our country is based on freedoms, which is something Obama wants to change right now! Obama is all about the government being in total control of all our choices. If the people don't believe this, just wait and see.
I--a woman-- agree whole-heartedly with you two ladies--I assume you are both women because a man would most likely not see it that way. One of the male Republican Senators did not want healthcare reform to cover maternity costs--said HE did not need maternity benefits, so why should it be covered? A woman senator reminded him that HIS MOTHER had needed them! Foolish man! Until a man can conceive, carry a child, and give birth to that child, I think they should not have input as to whether the woman has an abortion or not. Many men help conceive a child, & it is their child also--but they want the woman to do it all alone--literally & financially. I have a very low opinion of men when it comes to the abortion issue, as most men are not there for the woman or the child.
