Texas Drivers Could Face Higher Gas Taxes
A gallon of gasoline could cost you more under one plan to pay for new highways in Texas.

EL PASO (November 11, 2009)--Some state legislators who are concerned about how to pay for new highways in Texas have suggested the possibility of increasing the 20 cents a gallon state fuel tax.

Members of the Texas Senate Transportation Committee meeting in El Paso said money is lacking to build new roads.

Sen. John Carona of Dallas, who’s the committee's chairman, said Texas is growing but has no money to build more roads and "no more debt that we can issue."

Carona says the state fuel tax has been unchanged since 1991.

Texas charges 20 cents for each gallon of gasoline pumped.

Motorists also pay about 18 cents a gallon in federal taxes.

Rep. Joe Pickett of El Paso says it's too early to offer precise figures on how much the state fuel tax might need to be increased.

We've been taxed ENOUGH. I think we should Legalize GAMBLING, PROSITUTION, and MARIJUANA, and tax that. We could build new roads everywhere and put people back to work with the money that would generate!

Plenty of money has been collected for roads and highways over the last few decades. HOWEVER... This money has been diverted to one pet project after another until it is ALL GONE. How about prosecuting the elected idiots that stole the money from the roads and highway fund???
