WASHINGTON (November 22, 2009)--Two Democratic senators said Sunday the health care overhaul bill poised for Senate debate is a key to saving jobs and reducing the spiraling American budget deficit.
Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan said health care cost reductions for employers will save 3.5 million jobs and Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania said the measure would save the country $800 billion over the coming 20 years.
Republican senators aren't buying those arguments, however.
Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee predicted the measure will collapse under its own weight during debate, and Republican Sen. Kit Bond of Missouri calls the Democratic-sponsored measure a "scam."
The senators spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

Did you know that there is a $75-billion program that was designed to help 4 million delinquent homeowners avoid foreclosure? If it only cost us taxpayers say- $2-million per mortgage, thats 8 million dollars. Where is the rest of the money? This is Obama's plan. He owns it. They’re not even pretending any more. We are being robbed blind. Now just imagine what they are telling us this health care bill will cost and what the truth really is...but we can trust them right?
Any president-no matter who it might be-would have no choice but to do exactly as President Obama is doing. Will take time & will not happen overnight-it took years to get us into this mess that was caused by absolute Republican control that corrupted absolutely. And YES, I--as well as many economic experts--do blame the Republicans who deregulated & created ways to enrich themselves at the expense of other Americans. As to kettles & cow milking, I was responding to Bob who said to talk to someone who had lived thru the Great Depression before saying the Bush Recession was comparable to it. Read the other posts of mine & you will see that I grew up living a Pioneer/Early Rural Texas simple life & learned many ways of survival.I can also quilt & wring a chicken's or a guinea's neck, pluck it, & cook it. And more! I now live a modern life in the country & can survive nicely if I had to. Cheney Bumper stickers were offered to me & I merely stated what I would do with them.
(CONT'D) Republicans made it legal to break the law with CDS & derivative bundles--that would not have mattered if the housing market bubble had not burst. But it did & when folks started defaulting on their loans, the hedge funds (CDS, Etc.) were called in but no one knew who held them as there was no oversight of them & they had been bought & sold many times throughout the world. CDS are the toxic assets on the books today. In 2006, Republicans lost control of Congress. Republicans at Freddie Mac told Congress (wrongly & on purpose) that there was no need for reform at Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae, the mortgage giants, as all was well, but SECRETLY under the table paid Republican lobbying firm DCI TWO MILLION DOLLARS to lobby Republican senators to kill Republican Senator Chuck Hagel's reform bill. It died in committee, so no reform occured. The Republicans at Freddie Mac did not want their fraudulent gravy train to end. Republicans created a situation much like the Great Depression.
