Lawmakers Vow To Act To Limit Election Spending
Lawmakers say they’ll move quickly to stem a flood of corporate and union election spending.

WASHINGTON (February 2, 2010)—U.S. lawmakers dismayed by a Supreme Court ruling that frees corporations and unions to spend more on elections say they will move quickly to try to stem a flood of such campaign expenditures, using such possible short-term measures as requiring more openness about where money is coming from and giving shareholders a greater voice over political spending.

Massachusetts Democrat Sen. John Kerry, a former presidential candidate, says in the long run Congress should consider a constitutional amendment to overturn the court decision.

The Senate Rules Committee met on the issue Tuesday, less than two weeks after the 5-4 Supreme Court ruling that critics contend will vastly increase the power of big businesses and unions to influence elections.

Two House committees are scheduled to hold hearings on the issue on Wednesday.
