WASHINGTON (March 9, 2010)--Large majorities of those questioned for a new Associated Press poll want Democrats and Republicans to work together on overhauling the nation's system, but that bipartisanship is nowhere in sight in Washington.

The poll found a hunger for improvements to the system, which suggests President Barack Obama and Democrats have a political opening to push their plan.

Half of all Americans say the health care system should be changed "a great deal," and only 4 percent say it shouldn't change at all, but they don't like the way the debate is playing out, with GOP lawmakers unanimously opposing the Obama-backed legislation and Democrats struggling to pass it with a narrow majority.

The government run option hasn't been on the table in a long time, and it isn't now. We are talking about government regulations placed on the health care industry that overcharges, drops coverage, denies claims, needs tort reform, the ability to sell coverage over state lines, not to have a pre-existing illness disable your ability to get insurance at all, the ability for a small business to offer health coverage to their employees at an affordable cost, the ability not to go bankrupt when you do get really sick and already had health coverage that decided to drop you & to be able to pool coverage so the little guy doesn't pay the maximum premium for the least amount of coverage. None of these things exist right now, and I'm tired of paying more for health coverage for my wife and child than I do my mortgage without even having any permanent illnesses that would bankrupt us if we did. Your healthcare is the same healthcare I have...and it sucks! But, jobs 1st, health care 2nd.

Thank you. They both have good ideas (and both have bad ones, too). If they would stop acting like school children fighting over the play ground they could get some things done for Americans. It isn't just Obama holding it up & it isn't just the Republicans either. Both the Dem's and the Rep's are equal offenders on stupidity these days. Both parties are polarized and self centered. Both are more concerned with their jobs than with doing the American people a service.
