WACO (March 22, 2010)-The special election to fill former State Sen. Kip Averitt’s Dist. 22 seat is beginning to sizzle.

Baylor University political professor Gayle R. Avant, 69, has announced Saturday his intention to enter the May 8 special election to fill the remaining months of Averitt's current term.

Averitt resigned the seat last week after winning the GOP nomination in the Texas Primary election on March 2.

Avant is seeking to run as a Democrat in the special election.

In his bid announcement, Gayle referenced decades of service and experience teaching political science at the collegiate level.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Brian Birdwell of Granbury and former State Sen. David Sibley of Waco, whom Averitt replaced, are also running in the special election as Republicans.

Republican and Democratic Party chairs from each of the district's 10 counties are soon expected to meet and select candidates for the general election, should Averitt choose to resign his elected nomination from the November ballot.
