AUSTIN (June 27, 2013)—State Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, joined the crowded Republican primary for lieutenant governor Thursday.

Patrick announced his statewide campaign Thursday at a downtown Austin hotel about two blocks from the Capitol.

He joins a 2014 primary that already includes current Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples.

Patrick, a tea party favorite in the Senate, called Tuesday night's failure to pass an abortion restriction bills an example of failed leadership by Dewhurst.

The bill died when several hundred protesters in the gallery disrupted the Senate's final minutes before a midnight deadline after state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, filibustered the bill for hours.

Gov. Rick Perry has called another special session to address the bill starting Monday.
