Texas Senate OKs Overhaul Of State Cancer Agency

AUSTIN (April 3, 2013)--The Texas Senate voted Wednesday to overhaul management of the embattled Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, which has been rocked by investigations into how it awarded millions of dollars in grants.

The cancer-fighting agency has been under fire since last year over grants that bypassed the state's review process.

A scathing report from the state auditor alleged widespread failings at CPRIT involving transparency, accountability and decision-making.

The bill by state Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, would ban agency executives from having business relationships with award recipients and also would create a new oversight position to make sure agency rules are followed.

In 2007 Texas voters approved spending $3 billion on cancer research.

The agency overhaul bill now goes to the House for consideration.
