Perry Calls On Washington To Act To Stem Rising Immigrant Tide

WESLACO (June 23, 2014) Gov. Rick Perry called on Washington to take steps to curb the tide of immigrants flowing across the border after he visited a federal facility that houses young unaccompanied immigrants Monday and received a briefing from federal officials.

The border is not secure, Perry said.

"This is an absolute humanitarian catastrophe waiting to happen."

More than 50,000 unaccompanied children have entered the U.S. illegally since October and the number has overwhelmed the Border Patrol in South Texas.

Perry says the surge has distracted Border Patrol agents from other threats on the border.

Last week Perry announced that the Texas Department of Public Safety has been authorized to begin operations to combat crime along the border and that the state is providing $1.3 million a week to fund the surge operation, which will last until at least the end of the year.

“The staggering rise in the number of individuals crossing the U.S. border illegally represents a profound and major threat to the safety and security of our state and our country,” Perry said Monday.

“The federal government needs to act decisively and quickly to end this influx, and ease this suffering.”
