State Senate Race In Tarrant County Key To Texas Future

AUSTIN (October 6, 2012)--The winner of the race to represent western Tarrant County in the Texas Senate could set the tone for politics in the upcoming Legislative session in 2013.

The race pits Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis against challenger Rep. Mark Shelton.

Republicans hope a win would put Republicans within one seat of a two-thirds supermajority capable of passing any laws they want.

Democrats now hold 12 of the state Senate’s 31 seats, giving them just enough leverage to block some laws.

If Shelton wins, then Republicans will only need to court one Democrat defector to accomplish their goals.

The race appears very tight, and both sides are claiming advantages going into Nov. 6.
