Texas Comptroller: Local Government Debt Doubled In Past Decade

Print

AUSTIN (September 26, 2012)—Texas Comptroller Susan Combs, the state's chief accountant, called Wednesday for ballots in local bond elections to spell out the tax and debt ramifications before voters check yes or no.

A report that Combs released Wednesday centers on data showing local debt doubling in the past decade, and outpacing population growth and inflation.

It's an issue fiscal that conservatives and tea party groups have begun targeting with greater focus.

Combs said she's not making judgments on local projects, but said she believes voters aren't being provided with enough information before casting their ballot.

The report is titled "Your Money and Local Debt."

County officials typically answer criticism about bond packages as necessities to maintain infrastructure for more residents.

Combs is widely rumored to be mulling a run for lieutenant governor in 2014.
