Texas County Commissioner Indicted For Fraud, Bribery

DEL RIO (December 6, 2012)—Maverick County Commissioner Eliaz Maldonado of Eagle Pass has charged with fraud and bribery in a widening public corruption and bid-rigging investigation in the border county.

Maldonado of Eagle Pass surrendered Thursday and was released on $50,000 bond after he was indicted Wednesday on four counts of wire fraud and two counts of receiving bribes, federal prosecutors in Del Rio said.

Maldonado is accused of manipulating the bidding process to guarantee that contractors he selected would be awarded county construction contracts, in exchange for kickbacks.

A message left for Maldonado was not immediately returned Thursday.

He's one of several Maverick County officials or former employees to be indicted.

Maldonado faces as much as 20 years in prison per count if convicted of wire fraud.

The bribery charges carry maximum 10-year prison terms.
