AUSTIN (October 3, 2012)--The Texas attorney general agreed Wednesday to stop purging the names of 81,000 people from voter rolls who are listed as possibly deceased, said attorneys for four voters whose names are on the list even though they’re all still alive.

Voting registrars will continue to purge the names of those confirmed to be dead but not those whose deaths they can't confirm, according to a statement released by civil rights attorneys Buck Wood and Dave Richards.

The agreement came a day before a court was scheduled to hear arguments in the case.

The attorney general's office had no immediate comment.

The four voters who brought the lawsuit received letters from a county voting registrar asking them to confirm they were not dead.

The four argued that the impetus should not be placed on them to prove they are alive.
