Texas House OK’s Bill Legalizing Switchblades

AUSTIN (May 6, 2013)—On a voice vote and without discussion, the Texas House Monday approved a bill that would legalize switchblades.

The knives were outlawed as an anti-gang measure in the 1950s.

State Rep. Harold Dutton, D-Houston, the author of the bill, originally said he wanted to spark a debate on weapons laws, including gun control, but knife collectors and conservative Republicans embraced the measure, and it faced no opposition.

The law must now pass a procedural vote and then will go to the Senate for final approval.
