Unity Elusive At Texas GOP Convention

FORT WORTH (June 10, 2012)--The Texas Republican Convention began with a chorus of boos for Republican Gov. Rick Perry and ended with two candidates in a fierce battle for the GOP's U.S. Senate nomination trading barbs in dueling floor speeches.

Republicans were often at-odds during their three-day convention in Fort Worth.

The main fight centered around the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison between tea party darling Ted Cruz and mainstream Republican favorite David Dewhurst.

Perry drew boos when he reiterated his support for Dewhurst.

The two are headed to a July 31 runoff, with the winner almost certain to prevail in November's general election.

Still, party delegates put aside their differences long enough to approve a party platform softening the Texas GOP stance on immigration, and endorsing a guest-worker program.
