AUSTIN (May 19, 2009)--The Texas Senate gave preliminary approval Tuesday to a plan to let concealed handgun license holders carry their weapons on college campuses.
Texas college campuses are currently gun-free zones.
Supporters say the bill reinforces the constitutional right to bear arms and could help prevent mass murders such as the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech.
Opponents say the plan would make campuses more dangerous with the potential for typical college disputes over grades, romances and fraternity rivalries to become deadly.
Texas concealed handgun license holders must be at least 21 and pass a training course and a criminal background check.
The bill needs final Senate approval before the plan moves to the House.
A similar House bill did not get a vote before it died under a legislative deadline.

Yea, my job will now be more secure - several hundred, young, immature, stupid 18-21 year old hotheads running around with hidden power. Not, Our legislature is so d***ned stupid, it is a miracle of God that they don't absolutely die from their stupidity.
Thanks Texas Senate! MCC isn't scary enough...let's allow guns!
If the State Legislature is going to let guns in a classroom, they need to also require all gun carrying licensed students to inform their instructors of them carrying a weapon in class. Also, the legislature needs to let weapons be carried into the gallery of the State Senate and House. Good for the goose is good for the gander.
