DALLAS (September 23, 2009)--Students throughout Texas plan rallies, presentations and petition drives Wednesday in support of a bill that would allow high school graduates either to join the military or go on to higher education as a way to become legal immigrants.

The events Wednesday are part of the nationwide Back-to-School DREAM Act Day efforts.

The Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors is intended to help those brought to the U.S. as children and educated here.

It was introduced in the Senate and House in March.

The bipartisan bill is for students who graduate high school, have a good moral character, arrived in the U.S. before turning 16 and continuously lived in the country for at least five years.

Advocates estimate more than one million undocumented immigrant young people can't obtain a driver's license or work despite their educational achievements.

Those who serve in the military should be given special consideration for citizenship. Illegal immigrants in Texas receive years of education at taxpayers' expense. Local, state, & federal college tuition grants focus on minority ethnicity. We are now being asked to fund college education based on their illegal status AND ethnicity????

I am from Arizona, in a small rural town and I support the mexican legal immigrants. But I also support the illegal YOUTH of mexicans that come across the border for a better way of life. Its not the kids fault. Allow the borders to OPEN for work permits and visas, TAX them on their earnings and Mexico can also tax them it would benefit the US and Mexico and allow mexicans the chance to live and work legally. There are so many ways to work this out besides the hard line most are taking. All the youth who have graduated in our US school systems have much to offer as young minds of the world One could be the next Scientist to create a cure we never know. I say give them a chance to become legal since they have already been living in the US. Give them a chance to suceed.

the only free ride I'd be in favor of is one back to where they came from. Sad for the kids, but the parents made that choice for them once parents broke the law by sneaking in the country.
