AUSTIN (October 23, 2009)—Catherine Evans, the new ombudsman for the Texas Youth Commission, has been barred from entering TYC youth prisons under criminal investigation that she twice tried to smuggle in weapons, prescription drugs and cash, which is strictly prohibited.

Gov. Rick Perry appointed Evans to the Texas Youth Commission in September.

The ombudsman reports on TYC facilities and evaluates them to protect children's rights.

TYC spokesman Jim Hurley declined comment on whether Evans may have been trying to stage her own sting operation to test agency security.

Information about what kind of weapons Evans allegedly tried to bring in was not immediately available.

Carrying weapons and other contraband into a state correctional facility is a third-degree felony.

Evans is a former chairwoman of the TYC Advisory Board, a former state district judge and a former commissioner of the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission.

She volunteers with the Mercy Street Youth Mentoring Ministry, is a former secretary for the Mothers’ Against Drunk Driving National Board of Directors, and a past member of the Dallas County Juvenile Advisory Board.

She holds bachelor’s and law degrees from Southern Methodist University.

Yep! Sounds like she found her a lover who is a TYC inmate! Hey the teachers keep having affairs with kids, why not an Ombudsman? I want to know where these "Hot-to Trot" female teachers were when I was in my teens! I could have used some "training" from an older and more experienced woman!

The woman isn't behind bars yet? Bringing anything in to an offender is a crime, no matter the offender's age. Just because she has been to college and has several degrees, doesn't mean she isn't a criminal too! I have worked with numerous people who have college degrees who are now in prison. And YES, someone else would know about a sting. How about this? Maybe she fell victim to some sweet talking youngster that has some dirt on her. Still isn't a good reason to bring anything in to an offender! Another example of STUPID PEOPLE!
