EL PASO (October 29, 2009)--A federal judge in El Paso has dismissed bribery charges against a lawyer and a district clerk in a public corruption investigation.

Attorney and former El Paso County Judge Luther Jones and District Clerk Gilbert Sanchez are accused in an alleged scheme to award a contract.

U.S. District Court Judge Frank Montalvo, in an opinion released Wednesday, dismissed both bribery charges, as well as one count of mail fraud.

The judge ruled that Jones and Sanchez were indicted more than five years after those crimes allegedly occurred, which is beyond the statute of limitations.

Jones and Sanchez remain charged with felony conspiracy.

They’re both free on bond.

Their lawyers declined to comment.

I agree near-here. What a coincidence to wait five years. Since it is El Paso, must be something to do with violence there. Cannot imagine this. And yet the poor who don't have access to good represntation go to the slammer. shame shame shame
