BELLMEAD, Texas (KWTX) A 30-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on charges stemming from the death of his ex-girlfriend’s Chihuahua

Calvin Markus Roberts was named in Bellmead Police warrants charging animal cruelty, assault/family violence and unlawful restraint in connection with the death of the dog, named Dandy, police said in a press release.

The 45-year-old woman, whose name was not released, told police her puppy died after her boyfriend threw the pet against a wall in her apartment in the 4200 block of Bellmead Drive on July 29.

Bellmead Detective Kory Martin said the woman took the eight-week-old puppy to get medical treatment, but it ended up dying in the middle of the night.

She told police when she decided to end the relationship the next morning because of the incident, he threw a laundry basket at her, causing an abrasion, and then pushed a door shut as she tried to leave the home for about 30-45 minutes.

She eventually was able to call police but Roberts had left.

Roberts was later arrested by the Department of Public Safety and taken to the McLennan County Jail.
