Some customers waited in line for as long as three hours Thursday to take advantage of the offer to build a bear for the current age of a child in dollars, which meant that a bear could be purchased for a 1-year-old for just a buck.

To take advantage of the offer, customers had to enroll in the chain’s Build-A-Bear Bons Club rewards program or provide a valid email address and name.

By late morning, the Waco store had sold 1,500 bears and was offering vouchers for $15 for future purchases to customers still waiting in line.

Build-A-Bear, which opened its first store in October 1997, now has more than 400 stores worldwide, including the one in Waco.

Children can build their own bears from fur to stuffing and can also outfit their creations with wardrobes.
