WACO, Texas (KWTX) Overnight travelers are advised to seek alternate routes as a section of Interstate 35 in Waco is shut down Saturday evening.
The Forrest Street bridge is being demolished, prompting closures from as far north as exit 334B to as far south as 338B from 7 p.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. Sunday.
Loop 340 is named as an ideal alternate route for travelers to take in order to avoid delays.
Northbound mainlane traffic will be detoured to MLK Jr. Boulevard at Exit 335C and kept in a single lane until the on-ramp near U.S. 84/Bellmead Drive, while northbound access road traffic will be directed onto the main highway and merged into a single lane at the on-ramp north of 17th street until meeting the closure limits.
Northbound exits 334B, 335A, 335B, 337A, 337B, and 338A will be shut down overnight; the northbound access road at 4th street will be shut down; and northbound on-ramps at 4th Street, University Parks Drive, MLK Jr. Boulevard, and Forrest Street will also shut down.
Southbound interstate traffic will detour to the access road at a temporary exit near Elm Avenue, south of U.S. 84/Waco Drive and merged into a single lane on the access road down to the University Parks Drive on-ramp, while southbound access road traffic will be detoured onto the mainlanes between N. Loop 240 and Behrens Circle to merge traffic into a single lane before meeting closure limits.
Southbound exits 338A, 338B, 337, 335A, 335B, and 335C will be closed overnight; the southbound access road at Behrens Circle will be closed; and southbound on-ramps south of Behrens Circle and at U.S. 84/Waco Drive and Elm Street will be shut down overnight.
Additionally, MLK Jr. Boulevard and University Parks Drive will be closed to cross-traffic under the interstate during the closure, with signals at both intersections set to flash yellow and controlled by law enforcement.
Cross-traffic will also be restricted at the Business 77 interchange and at Bellmead Drive, with through-traffic prohibited and crossings controlled by law enforcement.
Warning signs are in place to assist drivers.
Drivers are also reminded to obey all warning and detour signs.
