HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas (KWTX) A ceremony Tuesday in Harker Heights honored law enforcement officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

Harker Heights hosted the 2018 Bell County Police Memorial Ceremony Tuesday.

Officers from Temple, Belton, Salad, Harker Heights, Killeen and Copperas Cove along with the Bell County Sheriff's deputies and county constables participated.

Sheriff Eddy Lange read the names of the 16 officers who lost their lives last year in Texas while on watch.

Rose pins were placed on a symbolic Texas map near the location where each of the 16 died.

The ceremony ended with a 21-gun salute and Taps.

May 15 was designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962 by presidential proclamation.

The week in which the day falls was designated as Police Week.
