The Bluebonnet Chapter of the International Code Council is a nonprofit organization comprised of local professional contractors, building inspectors, code enforcement officials and other experts.
The group, which meets monthly, is focused on the continued training and education of its members.
Michael Beard is a building inspector for the City of Harker Heights, and the Bluebonnet ICC President.
“You walk into a building to sit down and eat, and you don't really think, is this building going to fall on our heads, It's just a given that it's not going to,” Beard said. “The reason it's a given is because we do our job, and we're out there, and we're trying to promote education, and we're trying to teach and train."
The organization facilitates speakers and other experts to make sure continued safety is a tool that members apply to their daily jobs.
Beard said this connection between professional building experts in the Central Texas area is a benefit to public safety.
"Not everybody knows everything about everything, but the things that I don't understand and I don't know, I have a cohort that would know,” Beard said. “I'd have somebody in another municipality that could help me understand."
Beard said he hopes the organization can remind the public to be aware of their surroundings, and contact the city with any building safety concerns.
The Bluebonnet chapter sends members to additional training that their municipalities cannot afford, Beard said.
The organization also funds a scholarship at the Central Texas College.
The chapter is hosting a three-day safety conference, followed by a golf fundraiser in April.
