KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) Authorities Wednesday identified a teenager whom officers found shot to death near a vacant lot after responding to a report of gunfire in Killeen as Justin Lewis.

Lewis, of Henderson, N.C., was an Army private who entered the service in August 2016.

He had been assigned since February to the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood said.

Officers were dispatched just before 11:20 p.m. Monday to the 700 block of West Avenue C, where they found Lewis, 19, not breathing.

He was pronounced dead at the scene just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

An autopsy was ordered.

Police described the death as a homicide, but declined to say how he was killed.

A preliminary autopsy report, however, says he died of gunshot wounds.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (254) 526-TIPS.
