ROBERTSON COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) James Fachorn, 57, of Hearne, died early Wednesday after an 18-wheeler struck him as he attempted to walk across State Highway 6 just north of Benchley in Robertson County.

Witnesses told investigators that Fachorn was almost struck as he crossed the southbound lanes of the highway just before 6:40 a.m. Wednesday, but then walked into the path of a northbound 18-wheeler, Department of Public Safety Trooper Jimmy Morgan said.

Fachorn was taken to CHI St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan where he died at around 7:45 a.m., Morgan said.

The driver of the northbound Knife River Corporation truck initially thought the rig had hit a deer, but did pull off at the nearest safe spot to contact authorities, the company told KBTX-TV in Bryan.

"This is a tragic situation, our thoughts and prayers are with the person who was hit," Tony Spilde of Knife River Corp. told the station.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, whom Morgan identified as Joel Martinez, 59, of Buckholts, was not injured.
