(KWTX) Gov. Greg Abbott activated all 17,415, soldiers in the Texas National Guard after Hurricane Harvey struck the Gulf Coast, according to figures released Thursday.
There were 26,040 people housed in 15 National Guard supported shelters.
Soldiers also set up 29 food and water distribution points were set up in cities effected by the storm.
They gave out 129 thousand cases of food, 214 thousand cases of water, 215 thousand bags of ice and 129 thousand cases of food.
In total the Texas Military Department conducted 16,012 ground rescues, 349 air hoist rescues, evacuated 18,137 people and 1,214 animal evacuation from the Houston, Katy and Beaumont areas.
