WACO, Texas (KWTX) Phone scammers claiming to be Waco police officers are threatening local residents with arrest if they don’t send pre-paid debit cards to settle the issue, authorities warned Thursday.

Police say they never call ahead or demand money from those named in rrest warrants.

“When a police officer is going to serve warrants, they will knock on your door, they will be in uniform and they will have police identification,” Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

“You will know its law enforcement coming to get you.”

Residents who aren’t sure if they have outstanding warrants may call Waco police at (254) 750-7500 to find out, he said.

Police say they don’t want residents to fall victim to scams such as this one.

“It’s very difficult to prosecute these kind of cases because so many times they are bogus numbers,” Swanton said.

“They are overseas numbers and those people are very good, con artist. They get your money, they hit it and then they are gone.”
