WACO, Texas (KWTX) Waco police are emphasizing personal responsibility in an effort to counter an uptick in local vehicle burglaries and thefts, many of which involve vehicles that were left unlocked or running.

The Waco Police Department’s Burglary/Auto Theft Unit is reporting an increase in cases in which thieves are stealing purses, wallets, money and other items from unlocked vehicles and in cases in which vehicles left running or with the keys inside are being stolen, police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Thursday.

“Detectives have told me roughly two-thirds of the vehicle thefts we have are due to keys being left inside the vehicle,” he said.

“These types of crimes are obviously ‘crimes of opportunity’ and we believe the simple act of hiding your valuables, locking your car and taking out the keys can play an important role in keeping your property where it belongs,” he said.
