Thief breaks into more than 20 PO boxes at local post office

COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) Police say they’ve identified one suspect in the theft of mail and checks from more than 20 PO boxes at the U.S. Post Office in Copperas Cove, including one used by the city.

The break-ins were reported just after noon on Monday.

“The initial investigation revealed a total of 21 post office boxes damaged and appeared to be pried open,” police Sgt. Martin Ruiz said in a press release Thursday.

“If you recently made a payment to the City of Copperas Cove using the city post office box address, the Copperas Cove Police Department encourages you to monitor and safeguard your accounts through your financial institution,” Ruiz said.

The thief damaged or pried open PO boxes with the numbers 09, 39, 69, 99, 129, 130, 160, 249, 279, 550, 599, 1049, 1179, 1209, 1525, 1539, 1569, 1719, 1749, 1779, and 1809, Ruiz said.

Authorities have recovered a large quantity of mail and checks, he said.
