Officers responded to the crash shortly after 10 p.m. near the intersection of Bosque Boulevard and Fish Pond Road.

An initial investigation determined that a 2011 Toyota Tacoma that was westbound in the 6600 block of Bosque at what witnesses said was a high rate of speed crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Friday.

The driver of the Tacoma who died at the scene has been identified as 30-year old Matthew Nicholas Barrera.

The driver of the Tahoe was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center with what Swanton said were non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident scene was closed to traffic for several hours while police investigated.
