WACO, Texas (KWTX) Officials at the Waco-McLennan County Library are apologizing after a computer glitch gave some people incorrect fine amounts.

According to Library Director Essy Day, the error was the result of the library switching to a new, electronic system.

“As we changed to our new system, some patrons have gotten notices in the mail about fines that are incorrect,” Day said in a social media post.

The glitch caused emails to be sent to everyone who has fines older than one year on their account, saying they owe $50.00 and could be sent to collections.

“This is a computer error and we are sorry,” said Day. “We’re not saying you still have the books, the books were returned late, so there are fines on your account.”

However, Day said the fines are not $50, and they are not being sent to collections.

Despite the error, Day said with the new system, the library will be able to keep better track of patrons bills and inform them faster.

Anyone with questions about their book bill or believes they received the notice in error is asked to call the Central Library at (254) 750-5943.

“Again, we are very sorry,” said Day.
