Waco: Volunteers donate stockings for survivors

WACO, Texas (KWTX) A group of friends is helping families who've had a tough year ring in the holiday with a little cheer.

The Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children in Waco was given 90 stockings stuffed with gifts for survivors Wednesday morning.

A few years ago Mandi Barnes was a hotline volunteer for the agency and made 15 stockings with gifts for adult female victims of violent crime.

This year that number jumped to 90.

They will go to clients and to children who may not otherwise get a gift on Christmas.

“The fact that there are folks in the community that are pulling together with us to help bring some hope and healing to these families is significant and we appreciate that beyond words," Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children Program Director Dr. Kerry Burkley said.

Research shows women older than 18 who have been sexually assaulted or victims of violent crime are often forgotten during the holiday season.
