WEST, Texas (KWTX) The West Police Department is giving away free gun locks during the month of June.

The department partnered with Project Child Safe to bring awareness and education about firearm safety.

Residents can pick up their gun lock as well as informative pamphlets when they visit the station.

According to the National Safety Council accidents involving guns in the home have decreased significantly in the last 20 years.

Chief Darryl Barton said gun safety is always a good idea even for those with years of experience.

"Just because you're an expert shot out on the range doesn't mean that somebody in your home can't access a gun that you may have just used. Put that gun away immediately, safely store it with either a gun lock or gun safe because it takes a second for a child to grab it and use it," said Barton.

Barton said people don't need to live in West to get the locks.

He encourages anyone interested to check with their local police department to see if gun locks are also available.
